I Probably Shouldn't have been allowed to Watch This as a Kid
I'm not a fan of Tipper Gore and censorship but I'm realistic enough to know that there was some material that I should have never been allowed to view when I was just a young child. Last night I was watching Nancy Grace and there was a lot of discussion about a tragic shooting death perpetrated by an 8yr old and it made me think. Obviously that kids problems stem from something beyond simple television monitoring, but what were some of the stuff we should have never been watching at such a young age?
Someone put this 1977 adult cartoon in the kids section and we rented it. This film is not for children and may bring up more questions than any parent is prepared to answer.
Someone put this together on youtube. It’s a rundown of all of the violence in ROBOCOP and an example of why I should have never been allowed to watch it.
Return to OZ was much, much darker then it’s predecessor. It explores the idea that Dorothy is batshit crazy and needs to be put in a mental ward due to her hallucinations and stories about the mythical OZ. I used to watch this one a lot and, although I don’t know if it permanently scarred me for life, I am viewing this as more of a list for things that I watched that made me feel weird and uneasy as a child. Things that I watched and knew something different was happening to my brain that I was uncomfortable with and unsure about.
No Way OUt (1987)
Kevin Costner, Sean Young,…..GENE HACKMAN?! What bigger names are there to draw in a young 8 year old child? My sister took me to the movies with her friends to see “The Lost Boys” and then we all sneaked into this film.
I probably shouldn’t have been allowed to watch “The Lost Boys” either but I really shouldn’t have been allowed to see this one. Within the first 5 minutes…nude vagina. Then she’s thrown through a glass coffee table to her death. Later a corrupt gay government official puts a gun to his head and pulls the trigger. Nice move sis. Come to think of it, she’s only about 5 years older than me so she shouldn’t have been watching this film either.
Looking for Mr. Goodbar
I was 10 years old and I didn’t like seeing Diane Keaton getting killed at the end.
Boyz in the Hood
…Don’t get me wrong; this movie is awesome. The year it came out I was 10 and probably too young to fully appreciate the plight of Doughboy and Ricky Baker
Dig those sweet bullet wounds and Swastikas. This is much more of a tame version in this montage than the film as a whole.
ROBOCOP
It irreparably damaged my young mind when I saw Peter Weller get his limbs blown off by Red from that 70’s show.
Another fan trailer, this time for Return to Oz. You’ll notice the clips of the young Fairuza Balk in the mental ward where they are performing shock therapy on her.
Another different but somewhat similar guide that I just realized existed. It deals more with kid and family movies with abstract concepts that may have freaked you out as opposed to more adult films that damaged your childhood.
Prom Night (1980)
Not like I had my parents permission to watch this, but I was 7, and pretty damn sure of what I was doing.
Less Than Zero
OK, granted, the lesson in this movie is that drugs are bad. But watching these spoiled California rich kids live a fast life of sex and drugs and parents who don’t love them and guy-on-guy prostitution and no snow at Christmas and deadly overdoses really was disturbing.

The Pee Wee Herman Show
Before Pee Wee was a show on Saturday mornings!
This used to run on HBO during the day. No one should ever have to watch this movie let alone an 8 year old.
