I LOVE curry. It doesn't matter what country it originates from, what color it is, or what type of meat or vegetable is in it, because chances are, I will eat it (or at least taste it). And don't think all curries are alike. Just because you've had Thai curry doesn't mean you can skip out on trying on Burmese curry-- they're all deliciously different. So here's a quick primer when it comes to curry.

Get to Know Your International Curries:

Japanese Curry

Yeah, Japanese just might be my fave!

Thai Curry

I never met a Thai curry I didn’t like, but if I had to choose a favorite I’d probably go with red.

Mine is yellow Curry. YUM!

Singaporean Curry

This laksa curry looks AMAZING— too bad I’d have to go all the way to China to get it.

Indian Curry

Lamb curry with a side of naan. Best meal ever.

If it wasn’t so hot out I could totally go for some of this right now!

Vietnamese Curry

This version is pretty simple— with chicken and potatoes— but it’s BIG on taste.

Burmese Curry

This shrimp curry comes from the legendary Burma Superstar in San Francisco.

Curry Up!

Where you can get curries from around the world without having to go anywhere near LAX.

Joom

7825 Beverly Blvd Ste 2, Los Angeles, CA 90036

This Thai restaurant is in a random location (a mini mall near The Grove), but it’s SO good and SPICY— all their curries have a little asterisk next to them indicating that they are “spicy” and let me tell you these people aren’t lying! But all said and done the food here is GOOD— my red curry set my mouth on fire but I loved it just the same!

Buddha's Belly Restaurant

7475 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036

So whenever I come here I have a serious conundrum— what do I order? I can be somewhat picky, but I could literally eat every single item on the menu here (they serve all types of Asian cuisine), and it’s a big menu! So one time when I was facing such a conundrum, I decided to go for the Japanese curry— it’s vegan and chock full of tasty veggies and I was surprised at how good it was! Even without meat! Who would have thought?

Ginger Grass Silverlake

2396 Glendale Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90039

While Gingergrass isn’t exactly traditional Vietnamese I love coming here just the same— everything here just tastes so fresh I can’t stay away. They offer a pretty good range of stuff on their menu, including claypot curries! You have your choice of shrimp or tofu, but the lemongrass-lime curry sauce is non-negotiable. And delicious.

I love this Farmer’s Market stall— since Singapore cuisine incorporates my love of Thai and Indian food! So naturally this place serves up curry. And not only does this place serve traditional-style curries, but they also serve curry noodle soup (laksa) and curry puffs (they sort of resemble samosas)— yum!

Jasmine Market

4135 1/2 Sepulveda Blvd, Culver City, CA 90230

I’ve spent a lot of time up in the Bay Area in my day, and Burmese food is BIG up here, however no one really seems to talk about Burmese cuisine down south. So you can imagine my elation when I learned about Jasmine Market, a lovely Burmese restaurant in Culver City. They offer up all kinds of curries—lamb, ground beef, chicken, and goat (ok, I guess goat isn’t all that unusual). And the prices CANNOT be beat.

Daichan

11288 Ventura Blvd Ste F, Studio City, CA 91604

One of my foodie friends introduced me to Daichan (which serves up “Japanese Soul Food”) and much like some other places in this guide I was totally overwhelmed when I came here, because everything sounded good. And so naturally I gravitated toward my old standby: curry. And I was not disappointed! The curry here is pretty darn good— but I don’t really think you can go wrong here when you order— everything I’ve had here has been rather tasty.

Bulan Thai Vegetarian Kitchen

4114 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90029

When I came here I totally freaked out, because I literally had NO idea what to order. Everything on the menu sounded AMAZING, and since it’s all vegetarian I had a really hard time weeding things out. They have an awesome selection of curries including mock duck curry and jungle curry (which comes with pumpkin— my FAVORITE). There’s also a green curry spaghetti which is not to be overlooked.

India Sweets & Spices

18110 Parthenia St, Northridge, CA 91325

The food here is some of the better Indian food I’ve had in Los Angeles, and it’s some of the cheapest— go figure! They have traditional curries here, but they also serve up yogurt curry. HEAVEN. Also don’t forget to get some samosas and pakoras here— deep-fried goodness all around.

Hurry Curry of Tokyo

2131 Sawtelle Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90025

When I first came here I was like this place is weird— there’s spaghetti on the menu! But after I put my prejudices aside and started wolfing down my curry I was hooked!

There are TONS of places to eat Indian food in LA, and I have to say I have yet to find one that blows my mind. But I’m putting Ambala Dhaba on here (which is pretty good) because they serve Goat Curry! Yes, that’s right! While goat isn’t exactly frogs legs, it’s not something you see everyday on a menu, so when I came here I had to try it. And it wasn’t half bad! Sort of like a chewier version of beef.

Soooo if anyone ever stumbles upon something called “pondicherry” curry powder, lemme know. Whole Foods used to carry it a long long time ago, but since then, I can’t find it…and don’t know what makes it pondicherry.
