Hot Chocolate in the Cold City

-620594338

Whenever I don't like a certain situation, I try try try to look for the positives--that whole silver-lining, keep on the sunny side thing. Winter in New York is not an easy time, what with so much commuting being done in cold subway stations and through the wind-tunnel streets and the reliability of apartment heating being, well, not reliable. Where IS the silver lining? Hot Chocolate! An excuse to drink as much as you want because gosh it's cold and I'm hungry/thirsty and hey these delicate mittens are adorable but don't keep my fingers warm.

Hot Chocolate versus Hot Cocoa

Which side are YOU on? Did you even know there was a difference or do you use “chocolate” and “cocoa” interchangeably when you’re waxing poetic about these hot beverages? Well, there IS a difference. Your attention, please:
Hot Chocolate: made with milk or cream and chocolate (and usually some sweetener or spices)
Hot Cocoa: made from cocoa powder, water and sugar
Sooooo, basically hot chocolate is the rich gloppy mixture that you see in a lot of the pictures here and the stuff in the packets you probably grew up on is hot cocoa. I definitely prefer the brownie-batter-like hot chocolate, because it’s like drinking a delectable meal…even if it does give you a stomach ache!

Where to get some...

…hot chocolate, that is! And none of this soupy Swiss Miss stuff either!

The City Bakery

I haven’t tasted every cup of hot chocolate to grace the cafes and shop of New York, but City Bakery remains my favorite among the those I have tried. The homemade marshmallow costs extra, but you’ll never go back to those package Kraft ones again.

PLUS, every February is the hot chocolate festival, with a different flavor every day: caramel, bourbon, banana peel and cinnamon just to name a few. Do they want us to be fat???

There IS hot chocolate beyond the confines of City Bakery...

The chocolate experts! I’m always a fan of eating establishments that really let you have a peek at their process AND when their namesake is often present and not just a name. He’s such a cute man!

If you’re tired of the sweet or straight-up chocolate stuff, try the Wicked Hot Chocolate—spicy!!!

Similar to City Bakery’s, you may cheated at the smaller cup-size, but honestly, the portions at City Bakery’s are too big, so just embrace it and your tummy will thank you later.

Hi, I’m a vegan marshmallow!

Tiny and a bit cramped, it reminds me of bustling Parisian cafes, but skip the coffee for all things chocolate.

My recipe! Make sugar cookies and you’re set.

FROZEN Hot Chocolate? Come again?

I’m pretty sure that “have waited in the line to get into Serendipity 3” is one of those musts for New Yorkers who have friends in town, but won’t end up going on your waste-of-time list. It’s a restaurant, a general store, a sweets shop, a coffeehouse. Oh, and not just any sweets shop, but Andy Warhol’s favorite sweets shop.
And it happens to be famous for its Frozen Hot Chocolate, a drink served in a big sundae dish-like goblet with two straws and tons of whipped cream. There’s even a peanut butter chocolate version now, but if you want to avoid the lines to get either, you can buy their kit online and blender-up your own Frozen Hot Chocolate at home. (So, how is this different than a milkshake?)

You should eat ______ with hot chocolate!

Depending on the kind of hot chocolate you get, you may not need some edible treats to accompany it, but let’s forget about “need” for a second. Here are some ideas!

Peppermint Sticks!

If you don’t want to add too much to your cup of chocolate, try stirring it with a peppermint stick and giving it a minty kick.

I’m sitting at the cafe across from my house and the nice boy behind the counter gave me some free hot chocolate. It made my cold & cloudy L.A. day! No marshmallows though :(
