It's 3am and I'm Hungry: 24-Hour Eateries In Los Angeles

-621299018

One Saturday night, 3 vodka tonics, 2 Jack and Cokes, and 0 phone numbers. Hmmm.... sounds like you're in need of a 3am chocolate sundae. But where do you go? You could hit up Wendy's, and feel sorry for yourself while you dip your fries in your Frosty, or you could make eyes at buzzed bar hounds at one of these late-night spots.

Now, this is the ORIGINAL Tommy’s. Don’t be fooled by impersonators (yes, I’m talking to you Big Tomy’s.) This place is legendary when it comes to their chili cheeseburgers. And don’t get me started on the chili cheese fries. Sure, you’ll have to wait in line, and sure you’ll probably have heart burn afterward, but Tommy’s is worth it. So suck it up, and take your Tums.

You’ll look like a freaking mess after eating this, so make sure your date is drunk before you go here.

Kitchen 24

1610 N Cahuenga Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028

A hip Hollywood diner for club kids that don’t want to go home (or are too drunk to remember where home is), Kitchen 24 is trendy sort of place that actually serves pretty good food. However, be warned that because it is trendy and in Hollywood, it will be probably be packed to the gills after last call. And you thought you just had to wait to get into the bar? Welcome to Los Angeles.

Late-Night Resaturants

Fred's 62

1850 N Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90027

Late-night hipster hangout, thy name is Fred 62. Besides being home to EXCELLENT people watching, this retro-inspired spot serves some pretty good food. The menu is diner-inspired, but many of the dishes have a modern twist: french toast covered in corn flakes, “apple punk tarts” (a twist on traditional apple pie), and meatloaf spiked with cumin ketchup. And with random menu additions like udon, soba, mac & cheese balls, and frittatas, Fred’s has everything you could possible imagine eating at 2am.

Mmmmmm….. fried mac & cheese….

Canter's Fairfax Restaurant

419 N Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90036

If you’re still sad you didn’t get that phone number, a trip to Canter’s might be a good idea. This 24-hour deli is always packed with after-hours hipsters who aren’t ready to call it a night at 2am. Thanks to the neighboring Kibitz Room, the deli is often frequented by punk rockers (if that floats your boat), but there’s also overflow from neighboring bar The Dime as well as nearby concert venue the El Rey. If you’re looking for something on the greasier, fattier side to soak up those cocktails, you won’t be hard pressed to find something here. And if you’re still adhering to that old mantra “thou shalt not eat after 6pm,” there’s always soup.

My order: Matzah ball soup and a pastrami sandwich. Oh, and that Russian chocolate cake thing for dessert.

Dolores Restaurant

11407 Santa Monica Blvd Los Angeles , CA 90025

If you’re looking for a “Twilight Zone”-esque experience in the wee hours of the morning you might want to check out Dolores. This spot is slightly creepy, but in a funny Addams family sort of way. Some of the servers seem like they’ve been there since the place opened (1944), so don’t expect lightning fast service. The food isn’t anything special, but it’s edible. If you’re looking for an even weirder experience come on a Saturday night after the neighboring NuArt theater has screened “Rocky Horror.” P.S. The hours here are a tad erratic and tend to change. They say they are open 24/7, but that doesn’t always seem to fly. So check the hours before you go. Or just go to Benitos down the street.

Mels Drive-In

8585 West Sunset Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA 90069

Yes, it’s a Mel’s, but since it’s on the Sunset strip, and smack dab in the middle of West Hollywood, it’s a good place to reconvene with your party people for some eggs and turkey hash (the best!).

Izzy's Deli

1433 Wilshire Boulevard, Santa Monica, CA 90403

I went here a LONG time ago after a friend’s birthday at Zanzibar. And I have to say I don’t remember this place being anything special, but can you really complain at 1am? Not really, no. You’re better off going to Swinger’s on Lincoln, but if you end up at Izzy’s it won’t be the end of the world. Plus, doesn’t everything taste really good when you’re drunk, anyway?

Du-par's Restaurant & Bakery

6333 W. 3rd Street Los Angeles , CA 90036

Not much has changed at Du-par’s since the ‘50s—well, maybe the prices. During the daytime hours, Du-par’s is the destination for grandpas and screaming children, but the nighttime crowd is anybody’s guess. The food here isn’t anything special, but it won’t leave you feeling sick either. If you want to play it safe, get the buttermilk pancakes (Du-par’s is known for their hot cakes). If you’re in the mood for dessert, there’s about 20 different pies on the menu to placate your sweet tooth.

Du-Par's

Widget_dp91yknczieklo9sb_f3ve

Aww. Isn’t Du-par’s quaint with its little white picket fence?

Lucy's Drive Thru

1568 W Pico Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90015

In this day in age, it’s all about getting the biggest bang for your buck, or rather the most food for your money. So when late-night hunger hits, you could do worse than head to Lucy’s where the burritos are large enough to feed a small family. Oh, and get ready for some grease also.

Los Tacos

7954 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90046

If you’d rather cut your hand off than eat at Taco Bell or Del Taco, then Los Tacos might just be your late-night taco savior. The food here is authentic Mexican (tacos, chile rellenos, enchiladas..) which tastes like nectar after you’ve had a couple drinks, and by a couple I mean 5.

Swingers

802 Broadway, Santa Monica, CA 90401

DISCLAIMER: Swingers is not open 24-hours, but it is open from 6:30am-4am, and since you should be sleeping by 5am anyway, it is on this list. If you’re looking for something on the healthier side (or you’re feeling guilty for downing two calorie-laden margaritas at nearby El Cholo), Swingers is a fine choice. You can get a Middle-Eastern platter, laden with veggies and hummus, a tofu scramble, or tofu stir-fry with brown rice. But don’t worry, they have “normal people” food as well like steak and eggs, French toast, BLTs, and brownie sundaes.

Find yourself a swinger at Swingers.

Original Pantry Cafe

877 S Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90017

Fun fact: The Original Pantry is now owned by former LA mayor Richard Riordan! But back to business (i.e. the food.) This charming diner has been around since the 1920’s, so they know how to serve up a good meal (and a good cup of joe). OPC serves typical American diner food, which also happens to be perfect post-drinking food. You can fill up on eggs, bacon, hash browns, hotcakes, sausage, and steak—and that’s only a few of the breakfast options! There’s also lunch and dessert, but this place is all about the breakfast.

Pacific Dining Car

1310 W 6th St, Los Angeles, CA 90017

If you’re the type of person who has high standards when it comes to food (even when you’re drunk), then a trip to PDC is in order when you get the munchies in the early hours of the morning. Filet mignon, creamed corn, ribeye, creme brule, and spinach salad are just some of the offerings. The atmosphere is old, slightly stuffy, and expensive, but if you’re the type of person who would rather go to Lawry’s than the Apple Pan, then this is your joint.

A PDC steak (if that’s not a steak we don’t know what is).

25 Degrees

7000 Hollywood Blvd. Los Angeles , CA 90028

Not willing to lower your standards at 2am? Head to 25 Degrees! This gourmet burger joint is open 24/7, so you can eat a burger dressed with fancy cheeses (the menu says where they originate from, just like wine! crazy!) and french fries laced with thyme.

Astro Family Restaurant

2300 Fletcher Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90039

A 24-hour diner in Silverlake with mediocre food, you’ll probably be disappointed with your omelette, but at least you won’t be disappointed with the hipster watching.

Jerry's Famous Deli

8701 Beverly Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90048

This isn’t the BEST destination for a midnight snack, but if it’s all that’s within eyesight and you’re dying of hunger, then you might as well. Just be forewarned this place is overpriced and not terribly good.

Good to know, wish there were more places open late in AZ.

If only all this was in Denver. There’s not much open late here – I was up at 3 a.m. last night making pancakes.
