Help! My Laptop is Naked!
So I recently purchased a new laptop and had a HELL of a time trying to buy a case for it. For various reasons I ended up buying a PC, and while PC users may still outrank Mac users, it seems like NOBODY makes cute cases for PCs. So I ended up searching high and low around this town in order to find something to fit my 16-inch Toshiba. And here is my story (any resemblance to "Goldilocks" is strictly coincidental).
Fry’s actually has a pretty good selection of laptop cases (even though most of them are black and sorta ugly). But I ended up getting a pretty cute silver Tucano “Work Out” case, but when I took it home my laptop fit in, but the battery and power cord had to be squished in. I wasn’t digging the lack of space, so I gave it back.

Tucano "Work Out"
Hip, but not big enough for a PC…
Staples doesn’t have a huge selection of latptop cases, but they do carry Built NY, who make pretty spiffy cases. However, Built seems to cater to Mac users and they make their designs pretty slim. I bought a cute polka dot case at Staples and took it home, but the 15.4 inch case was a tad too small for my 16 inch computer. A slimmer computer probably would have fit, but the Toshiba is a bit on the thick side…So back went the Built case.

Built NY Laptop Portfolio Case
Fun, but not big enough for a PC…
My Laptop Bag Search Across Los Angeles
Sort of like the Amazing Race…but with just one person.
After an unsuccessful episode at Staples I decided to check out Office Depot— who also happen to carry Built cases. And while they DID have 17 inch sleeves, they were sadly rather thin and Mac-ish. And they wouldn’t have solved the whole “where do I put the batter and power cord” problem.

Cool, but not big enough for a PC…
I was surprised to learn that Target carries a pretty wide selection of laptop cases (including Built and BYO— Built’s cheaper sibling), so I went down to the store to take a look around. Sadly, the store didn’t have as nearly many options as they had online, but they did have a couple things that wouldn’t have been too horrible. I was pretty close to getting super desperate and just buying a Case Logic case for $19.99. I figured I could use it in the mean time while I spent time looking for something I REALLY wanted. Thankfully I wasn’t THAT desperate and I decided to hold off on the Case Logic purchase— $20 I later put toward my Patagonia laptop bag purchase.

Case Logic Laptop Case
Functional? Yes. Affordable? Yes. Boring? Yes.
Since I bought my computer at Best Buy I thought Best Buy would be a good place to look for a case. WRONG! Best Buy (or at least the one I went to) had NOTHING! And what they did have was pretty gosh darn ugly.

Even though I had bought a PC, I decided to go to the Apple Store to see what kind of cases they had. Apple actually has one of the best selections around…if you happen to have any Apple. If you don’t, the cases might be a squeeze. But, I have to say my Apple expedition turned out to be an excellent idea, because that’s what lead me to my final destination in my laptop bag search….Patagonia.

Lacoste Laptop Bag
One of the snazzy (and pricey!) bags available at the Apple Store.
Patagonia Half Mass Bag
Big enough for a Mac laptop, but not big enough for a slightly more zaftig PC…
While I was at the Apple Store I noticed they had some nice laptop bags made by Patagonia, but since none of them fit my laptop I decided to do some research online. After researching, I decided to give Patagonia a call to see what they had in stock. The salesperson was SO incredibly helpful and lovely (she even gave me a code to get free shipping on the website) and she told me that Patagonia’s summer sale was starting the VERY next day! So I hightailed it down to Patagonia the next day and got me a laptop bag that was 50% off AND actually fit my computer with relative ease. SUCCESS.

Patagonia Lightwire Brief
Very cool bag— but it was on the smaller side…
Patagonia Lightwire Backpack
Also very cool— I was THISCLOSE to getting it.
Patagonia Beeline Commuter Backpack
I ended up getting this one (in black) because it was slightly cheaper, and because it didn’t make it look like I was carrying a gorilla on my back— being relatively short I have to worry about things like that.
