Surviving On One Income

The economy is no secret. Everyone I know (myself included) has been punched in the face by the big bad economy to some extent. In my case I came away with a broken nose and a lot more free time. So how do you and I figure out the changes that need to happen in our financial books? What can we cut? What can we do differently?

Tip Number 1 - Get a Library Card

Libraries aren’t just for old biddies looking for misbehaving children. Cancel that Netflix account and head over to the closest public library to pick up some DVDs for free. I’m currently enjoying Hot Fuzz, Heat, and Into the Wild. Not bad for a few free movie nights.

Tip Number 2 - Cancel the Gym Membership

Growing a sweet mustachio like this guy will help you run at supersonic speeds.

What? Cancel my gym? But without a job it’s the perfect time to get totally shredded bro!
OK, having no gym will give you more time to get totally shredded, but instead of plunking down a big gym fee every month just go for a run or a walk or a bike ride. You can get a free workout in on 100% of city streets by putting one foot in front of the other in a quick repetitive motion.

Also, (remember Tip Number 1?) check the library for fitness DVDs and get a personal trainer in your living room for free. Since I don’t have dumbbells I’m using cans of pinto beans.

Tip Number 3 - Learn to Cook

source

If you already know how to cook you’re one step ahead. When you need to drop back to a single income household one of the first cuts should be restaurants. Do you really need to go get lettuce wraps two nights a week? Wouldn’t making them be cheaper?
So plan a menu, buy your groceries and whoever is staying home is in charge of cooking dinner.

Tip Number 4 - Drop Your Brand Loyalty

source

Ferry Plaza Farmers Market

1 Ferry Bldg, Ste 50, San Francisco, CA 94114

So now you’ve planned a menu of home-cooking. You may be asking “But Hi Liner, won’t all those groceries add up to a big bill too?” It’s possible, but you can change that as well. Instead of sticking to your brand loyalty, get out of the grocery store and into the farmer’s markets. The benefits of the farmer’s markets are two fold:

1. You’ll save money by buying direct from the source.
2. You’re supporting local farms.
3. You’re being environmentally conscious by buying food that hasn’t traveled 1,500 miles to get to your dinner plate.

Look at you! Saving money and the environment at the same time!

Tip Number 5 - Plan Your Budget

source

When less money is coming in, less money should be going out. To make sure that is the case you need to plan your budget. Figure out the monthly bills, the monthly take-home, the monthly extraneous expenses and then start cutting. An excel spreadsheet is really all you need, but if you don’t have Microsoft Office they are expensive and mean) check out Google Docs a free spreadsheet program.

Cheapness on the Go

Tip Number 6 - Get Better Deals on Your Bills

Gesticulating while negotiating always leads to winning deals.

Comcast

1905 E Bayshore Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94303

I was paying a lot for my internet, cable, and phone package. I went back and compared deals with other companies and found I could save $130 every month by rearranging some stuff. Don’t let Comcast or whoever your provider is make you feel like they are doing you a favor. Go back to the drawing board to see if you really need 500 channels with DVR service or if there is that much of a difference between Super Internet and Premium Internet and Supremiumer Internet.

Tip Number 7 - Get Your Vinegar On

I was a skeptic here as well. But as of last weekend every window and screen in my house is sparkling as the result of being cleaned with a vinegar solution. Check out how to create your own cleaners from plain old vinegar. tips and recipes for everything from cleaning to laundry to gardening products, the amount of money that can be saved by buying one large tub of vinegar is pretty amazing.
Viva la Vinegar!

Tip Number 8 - Bake Your Own Bread

Widget_d-oyyhi4plvjr5hhyb3sij

Adding funny shapes is optional.

Baking bread may sound a little scary, but over the past two weeks I’ve had homemade cinnamon raisin bread and homemade white bread. Both were amazingly easy and amazingly delicious. In addition to being delicious baking your own bread is WAY less expensive than buying it and you can make it WAY healthier than store bought loaves of calories. Give it a shot!

Tip Number 9 - Organize Yourself

I’m going to add “Be Happy” to every to-do list I make.
source

Even though being at home with what seems like a lot more free-time may seem like the perfect opportunity to throw out those handy check lists, it’s actually the time you should get more organized. Use those handy Google Docs spreadsheets again to create a to-do list or just put pen to paper. Having a list of tasks to accomplish every day will keep you motivated and active instead of sitting on the couch and getting sucked into Victor’s struggle with Jack about Ashley.

Tip Number 10 - Blow the Dust Off Your Personal Library

source

Who needs to go out? Who needs to go the library (yeah, that’s right Tip Number 1, you’re not THAT special). Most of us have a shelf (or shelves) full of DVDs, books, video games, board games and any number of other entertainment devices that we bought when the cash was flush. So now is the time to put those to good use. Watch that Lord of the Rings Trilogy that you just had to have when it came out on DVD. Relive the glory days of kicking ass in Monopoly. probably have more hours of entertainment in your home than you even know.

Tip Number 11 - If All Else Fails...

Creatively beg.
