If you've ever shelled out $20 for a terrible play to support a friend in New York City; endured the sensory onslaught of a packed gallery opening lacking any good art; tagged along to a friend of a friend's gig at the Sidewalk Cafe and had to wait a full hour for a half hour of noise, then you know just how rare and welcome real talent is. Our time and money are simply too precious not to go in search of it. But who are these emerging indie greats and how do we find them? Add your favorite NYC indie actor, band, chef, singer, writer, director, inventor, designer or visual artist here. Lead the way!

Erin Treadway - Actor

This Texan beauty reminds you that some people are just born to be actors. A favorite among NYC’s emerging theater elite, Erin has starred in many plays and short films, often collaborating with fiance, Steven Gridley.

Steven Gridley - Playwright

One to watch and already garnering top accolades in theater, this young playwright produces profound, intellectual, and accessible plays in NYC, including many of his talented fellow SMU graduates in the process.

Kelly Geary

Founder of Sweet Deliverance, an organic home-cooked meal delivery service! Now if that’s not indie, I don’t know what is. Operates out of Brooklyn, delivers all over AND uses compostable corn plastic containers. Kitchen powered by harnessing wind energy! Yessssss.

Key Appleseeds

According to Danielle Cook, K.A. has a crazy haunting, moving, cool voice and looks like an Asian dude trying to be a burnt out blues musician with a Williamsburg/lower East side flava. He plays on the L train subway platforms and you can’t not notice him.

Mmm…cake…mmm…music. (Good music.)

Andres Munar - Actor/Director

Mr. Munar is a throwback to the seventies style of intensity, making you feel like you’re getting a taste of what it must have been like to see Al Pacino or Dustin Hoffman in their hayday. This NYC actor recently starred in Steven Soderberg’s “Che” and also festival-bound, “Entre Nos”, but spends most of his time performing onstage in NYC and LA.

Jeffrey James Keyes - Writer/Photographer

In his plays and screenplays, Mr. Keyes does what few young writers dare to do: use his imagination. Whether it’s a new take on a familiar subject or a journey into the surreal, Jeffrey James never fails to entertain with his wit, worldliness and talent for creating characters. Keyes is also a travel writer, contributing fresh features and photographs to several national publications.

Anthony Atamanuik - Comic/Humorist

A regular on “30 Rock”, a favorite to watch at Upright Citizen’s Brigade, and founder of DebatePorridge.com, Anthony is a wealth of facts, theories, and outrageous claims. If he doesn’t make you laugh then chances are you have no sense of humor and you should probably have that looked at.

Joey Degraw

Widget_bxy-59govgs6ai361qudp3

You make recognize the name, because Joey is the older brother of famous singer Gavin Degraw (“I don’t wanna be”, “Chariot,” “I’m in love with a girl” etc. ) The two brothers are both touring and working musicians who own The National Underground, a bar and music venue on the Lower East Side. I used to do some radio promotion for Joey and his music effing GREAT…..Check him out.

The name's Aubree. I'm a New England-Yorker, writer/editor, and a day trip enthusiast. In my humble opinion, the best "bang-for-your-buck" day trip in the metro NYC area is a train trip to Sleepy Hollow. (In the Fall, of course.) -@
