Oh the Horror: Halloween is Here in Boston
The candy has been on the store shelves since mid-August. That's when I start to cringe. See, I am in the minority of the U.S. population that does not enjoy Halloween. But, don't hate on me. I try my best to be a good sport. I've even dressed up the last couple years and played along with the best of them! Instead of giving myself nightmares about Halloween over a month in advance, I'm laying out my options and planning ahead so I can come to terms with them. At least Boston has some pretty fabulous options when it comes to celebrating my most dreaded holiday of the year.
Buy Lots of Halloween Candy
Just about the only thing about Halloween I enjoy: candy!!
Because I’m forced to participate in Halloween festivities, I make myself feel better by allowing myself as much chocolate and sweet stuff as I want.
CVS, along with all the other local drugstores, is the best place to pick up your Halloween candy. They have SO much of it (starting at the end of August) and you have a very good selection to choose from.
Really, you should be buying the larde, king-size bars because that’s what all the kids coming to your door want. And bonus, if there’s some leftover, more for you!!

The Fireplace
Could one of my favorite Boston-area restaurants save my Halloween?
OK, this might be the one thing I would actually kind of enjoy doing on Halloween. Going for a fabulous dinner at the Fireplace. Yes, I’d still have to wear a costume, but at least I could eat food from the Fireplace and sip on their delicious drinks.
Maybe we could even tell ghost stories by the fire.

The Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline usually has some sort of Halloween movie madness. If I knew of someone who wanted to sit and chow on popcorn with me all night while being scared out of our guts, I would totally do this. The CCT also sells hot apple cider, which would make this night totally complete.

The ultimate Halloween escape?
Salem is one of my top choices for Halloween because it’s actually like putting some meaning behind the holiday. Plus, I really like being scared as long as I’m with someone else and not completely alone.
There is SO much going on in Salem at Halloween time, but be sure to check out one of the ghostly tours! Or to see some witches!

Likes of strange and spooy activity going on in Salem during Halloween.
An Odyssey dinner Cruise on Halloween might not be so bad either, assuming the weather hasn’t hit that horrible winter chill quite yet. I’m not sure if costumes are required, but I’m guessing they are. Darn it.

Sail away with my on Halloween?
Jack-o-lanterns
You could always stay in on Halloween and carve a Boston-related pumpkin. Just make sure the neighborhood teens don’t come and smash it. On second thought, maybe you shouldn’t even bother.
A great, not too far from Boston spot to pick out your pumpkins!

I went to Spooky World a few years ago and I was scared. I wasn’t necessarily scared by the monsters and ghosts floating around, but more so by the things jumping out at me. Jump out of a corner in a dark room screaming and I’ll probably scream too. I might even scream so loud, I scare you.

Be Scared
Oooh now that is what I call spooky.
Your Map to Actually Trying to Enjoy Halloween
Go to all these places if you actually want to get some enjoyment out of the holiday. Maybe. Or maybe just stay home, turn out all the lights, and hide when the doorbell rings.
How to Dress on Halloween (or how not to dress):
Party Favors has ALL your costume needs. And it’s a cute little store that is always a joy to be in because it smells like cupcakes ALL the time. Yes, it tends to get a little bit crowded and hectic, but you can always find what you need here, whether you want to purchase a ready-made costume or make your own.
And get cupcakes on your way out. They always have cute Halloween decorated ones. And they are the best cupcakes in the world!!

Garment District
Looks to be a bit of a mess, but you should have no problem finding your Halloween costune here.
The Garment District is a mess of a place that I really don’t quite understand. Generally, it’s a great place to go and thrift. However, at Halloween time, the amount of costumes and accessories are out of control. It’s not so much a district as it is a giant department thrift-store.
The Garment District at Halloween scares me because it’s filled with people and crazy clothing everywhere. But if you’re looking for that perfect costume, you should probably go.

Dressing the Family!
Oh my. Mom and Dad, I’m going to take this opportunity to extend a great big thank you for never making the whole family dress up together. I would probably still be scarred if you had done this.
Come. On. People. How do you think this is OK?
The King Costume
You might not have any friends if you dress like the Burger King man. People do not like this guy. People turn the TV off when he comes on. Do you want to be a complete and total outcast?? Oh, you already are? Then by all means.
Baby's 1st Halloween
Ahhh! This child is going to rot its teeth out before it even grows teeth!
But the pumpkin costume? Adorable! Babies on costumes generally creep me out, but I like pumpkin anything, including babies.
Doggy's Least Favorite Holiday Too
Look! Someone else agrees with me about hating Halloween!
It’s never a nice thing to dress your dog up. But I always think it’s cute. I mean, as long as the dog isn’t actively trying to rip its costume of, I think it’s OK, right?
And come on, it’s Dorothy! How can you resist?
Worst Adult Halloween Costumes Ever
Got a honey? Well, you’re in luck if you do. This year, you are your significant other can dress up like giant cry babies. Is there anything more attractive than that??
Giant rattle, pacifier, and bottle; not to mention a huge diaper? Of course, your boyfriend will agree to it!
What's With Men Wanting to Dress Like Babies?
I’m still not quite sure I get how this works. But I do know that if you see someone wearing this costume, you should run. Like really, really far away.

Heed my warnings about the worst costumes ever and have fun picking out your costume. Or making your own. In my opinion though, there are just way too many costumes to avoid. Be careful out there!
