So, you're going to visit UNH? It's my personal opinion that the University of New Hampshire has the best of what colleges have to offer. It's big enough that there are always plenty of new people to meet, but small enough that you feel at home hanging out on quaint little Main Street on a Saturday afternoon. Visiting UNH is perfect for any time of the year as the campus is beautiful year-round and there's always more than enough to do. Use this guide to plan your visit to the University of New Hampshire and go Wildcats!

University of New Hampshire

Durham, NH 03824

Welcome to the University of New Hampshire in Durham, New Hampshire, one of my favorite places in the country! With so much to do and such a beautiful campus, writing this guide has made me miss UNH more than anything. I almost wish I never graduated. Well, maybe that’s not true (it’s not exactly cheap to go there!), but I do need to remember to go back and visit more often.

A beautiful fall day on the UNH campus.

Getting There:

UNH is easily accessible from 2 major airports!

Manchester Airport is located about 40 minutes from UNH. It’s a smaller airport making it very easy to navigate (and park at), but it might not have all the flights you need.

Where to Stay:

UNH doesn’t have a plethora of lodging for parents and visitors right in Durham, but there are a few really nice hotels. And if you can’t get a room in one of these, you can always stay in nearby Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a beautiful town where there’s even more to do!

The Holiday Inn Express was built in Durham out of necessity. Parents and visitors didn’t want to have to book a hotel in Portsmouth and drive to campus every day. So the Holiday Inn Express was built, and now parents can stay extremely close to campus (without being right on campus).

The hotel is new, having been built in 2005 and renovated in 2007. Though the hotel is quite convenient, it’s fairly small with only 68 rooms, so be sure to book your stay as early as possible (especially for move-in, parent’s weekend, homecoming, etc.)

Three Chimneys Inn

17 Newmarket Road, Durham, NH 03824

Stay at the Three Chimneys Inn if you want less of a typical hotel and more of an experience. Located right off of campus, it’s an easy walk to Main Street and all the action, but you’re far enough away that you’ll also get a good night’s sleep.

Three Chimneys Inn was built in 2649 and is one of the oldest houses on record in New Hampshire. The hotel has 23 rooms, so if you’re visiting UNH for parent’s weekend or another special occasion, book a room early.

The hotel also features several dining options with delicious food, so make sure you eat at least one meal at Three Chimneys, even if you’re not staying here!

New England Center

15 Strafford Ave., Durham, NH 03824

The New England Center allows you to stay right on campus without really feeling like you’re on campus. You won’t have to deal with any noisy students on a Friday night and you’ll feel nice and cozy nestled in the woods.

This hotel is also a busy one during special UNH days and weekends, so be sure to book your room early. Even if you’re not staying here, it would be worth it to check out the hotel’s restaurant, Acorns; the seafood is fabulous.

Where to Eat:

If you’re visiting a student at UNH, you might be doing them a huge favor by taking them somewhere off campus to eat! Not that the UNH campus doesn’t have some fabulous restaurants, but since Durham isn’t a huge town and there aren’t a whole lot of options that don’t reaquire transportation, your UNHer might be psyched to eat somewhere away from the school.

However, you should also be sure to get a taste of what students at UNH have to choose from every day!

Libby's Bar & Grill

47 Main St, Durham, NH 03824

Libby’s is my favorite UNH restaurant for a nice, but casual dinner. The sandwiches, salads, burgers, and entrees are all fabulous and the bar is extensive. Just don’t stay here too late because Libby’s is also an extremely popular campus bar and before you know it, the restaurant will start filling up with college students looking to party.

Young’s is one of the best spots to get a sit-down breakfast on campus (besides the dining halls, of course). A lot of Durham townies hang out here, but it’s also the ideal spot to meet up with friends for a Sunday morning brunch or even to grab coffee and have a chat with your professor. They also have an extensive lunch menu and offer lots of special deals.

Young’s is located right on Main Street. Get there early on a Saturday or Sunday morning because the wait can be long!

Franz's Food

46 Main St, Durham, NH 03824

Franz’s Food is one of those eateries that makes you say, “What??” and then you realize what a smart idea it is. Franz built his take-out food spot right in the Durham Laundrymat. He has a little window where you can order some of the best sandwiches and breakfasts anywhere at UNH. A fabulous idea for those waiting for their laundry to finish; but really just fun for anyone hanging out on Main Street.

Plus, Franz is so nice he’ll actually ask about your life and probably even remember what you usually order.

Pauly's Pocket

A little hole in the wall on Main Street, Pauly’s Pocket is perfect for anyone craving a quick Middle Eastern meal. Their falafel is amazing and Pauly is always friendly behind the counter!

JP's Eatery

38 Main St. Durham, NH 03824

When I was at UNH, JP’s was the Friday night hot-spot for dinner before we went out for the night. We most usually got chicken finger dinners, but JP’s has pretty much every kind of sub, sandwich, pizza, and more. There is some seating and booths at JP’s, but students often get take-out to bring their greasy goodness back to their dorm.

Get Your Coffee:

What’s a college campus without a couple good coffee shops? One of my favorite things about UNH is that they’re not over-run with chains. Yes, there is a Dunkin’ Donuts, but it’s a bit of a walk from main campus and certainly not where a majority of students go to get their daily fix.

Breaking New Grounds

50 B Main St, Durham, NH 03824

I always loved getting my morning coffee at Breaking New Grounds on Main Street because it isn’t a huge corporate chain and the employees are always nice and happy. Plus, the coffee is fabulous. And the baked goods even better!

During the warm weather, grab your coffee and sip it at the seating in front of Breaking New Grounds.

Bagelry the

1 Mill Rd, Durham, NH 03824

In my UNH days, I was always running into The Bagelry for a coffee, breakfast bagel, or lunch sandwich. It’s one of the things I miss most about UNH- it’s a non-corporate, independent bagel shop that is always delicious.

Another fabulous thing about UNH is all the visits from political figures. Hillary Clinton loves The Bagelry as much as I do!

Out and About on Campus:

The absolute best thing about UNH (besides the wonderfully enriching classes of course) is how beautiful the campus is. From the buildings to the landscaping, you always have the true college feeling here. No matter what season you’re at UNH, it will take your breath away. I never thought anyone of anything could actually make me enjoy winter. But when you see how pretty the UNH campus looks covered in snow, you won’t mind being a bit chilly (OK, or really chilly).

Hamilton Smith

Widget_bgd5k2sdjbc73gylt8xemk

I think this is one of the prettiest buildings on campus, Hamilton Smith (more commonly referred to as “Ham Smith.” I spent a lot of time here as it’s the place where a majority of English classes are held. Students will definitely have at least one class in Ham Smith in their 4 years at UNH.

Winter At UNH

See? I told you UNH covered in snow is a beautiful sight.

Magnolias at UNH

Widget_cknf-nbmnkaijin1xo8mdq

People generally tend to think of UNH as being a campus covered in snow, but during the spring, summer, and fall weather (yes, we get all seasons!), the campus is quite beautiful. My favorite part about spring is the lovely magnolia trees blooming on campus.

Campus Fun and Necessities:

There’s lots to do on the UNH campus and plenty of places to go, so UNHers pretty much never get bored. Whether it’s attending a sporting event or hanging out on Main Street, you’ve got it. Here are some of the essentials you’ll need to know about enjoying life at UNH.

The Whittemore Center is one of the most popular spots on campus because it’s where all the hockey games take place! In addition, the Whit (as it’s fondly called) contains the student gym, indoor track and basketball courts; and plays host to a huge variety of concerts and events throughout the year.

UNH Hockey

UNH Hockey! If there’s one thing UNHers go crazy over, this is it. While the team has been hot and cold lately, UNHers are patiently waiting for them to reach the top again, and supporting them every step of the way. Attending hockey games is an activity most students enjoy. And parents often like to attend while visiting their kids. This is the ultimate in school spirit!

Typical of the fun had at a UNH hockey game. UNH vs. UMaine are the best games to go to!

UNH Wildcat

Widget_cvisyjmftiyk1zw8vhaggy

This cute little cat is a fairly new addition to the UNH campus. It was unveiled during UNH Homecoming 2006 and was entirely funded from private gifts ($160,000 worth of them!). It sits out in front of the Whit and is the perfect place for a photo opp with the fam!

The Dimond Library

Widget_aydan5ov1id54twiy6da8x

The Dimond Library is one of the prettiest UNH buildings and is an absolutely amazing library with 5 floors of books and study rooms. Students love the library as a great escape away from the noise and fun of their dorms.

The Mub

Widget_b9wkrfyrfatlpnual3poqa

The Mub, or Memorial Union Building, is a spot where UNH students spend a lot of time. It features a food court where students can use their meal plan; the UNH bookstore; and many theaters and rooms where various clubs and organizations meet.

The UNH bookstore is located in the Mub and carries everything from books (obviously), university apparel, dorm necessities, and more. While the bookstore is fun to visit, most professors at UNH will tell you not to purchase your books here and you’ll probably notice that a lot of the apparel is a bit over-priced.

Many UNH professors will tell you to purchase your books from the Durham Book Exchange on Main Street. The DBE offers lots of deals on used books and is an independent bookstore (whereas the UNH Bookstore is owned by Barnes and Noble).

UNH students simply walk into the Durham Book Exchange with their class schedule and employees with gather their books for them. Easy!

Hayden Sports

36 Main St, Durham, NH 03824

Hayden Sports is the hot spot on Main Street for purchasing UNH apparel. The shop gives all incoming freshman a free t-shirt during orientation and continues with the deal-giving all year round. Hayden’s has many similar things to the bookstore (and much, much more) but offered at better prices.

I worked at Hayden Sports while at UNH and was always impressed by owner Roger Hayden’s willingness to give students a great deal of responsibility, as well as his constant quest to make quality apparel at an affordable price.

Holloway Commons

There are several dining options for students with meal plans at UNH, but Holloway Commons is the newest and nicest of the dining halls. It also features Panache Cafe.

Off Campus Necessities:

While Durham is the perfect charming little town, it certainly doesn’t have all of the things you might need (which is partly why I love it so much). Luckily, everything you might need isn’t too far away by car or bus (and the university provides shuttle service to many places) and you’ll most likely want to head toward Portsmouth, Newington, or Dover.

Fox Run Mall

Fox Run Rd, Portsmouth, NH 03801

The closest mall to UNH is about 15 minutes away in Portsmouth. It may not be the most glamorous mall, but it certainly does its job and you’ll find many UNH students here on the weekends.

Other Stores You'll Need

When moving into UNH, students often need a good Home Depot, Walmart, and Bed Bath & Beyond. Unfortunately, none of these are located right on or super close to campus, but an easy 10-15 minute car ride will get you there.

And if students need to pick up necessities when parents aren’t around, there’s a really easy-to-use bus that will get you from campus to the shopping action and back.

Portsmouth, NH

Widget_bf__eeqqne473fgof1xoad

Portsmouth is one of my favorite get-aways from UNH. It’s a cute little seaside town with tons of cute boutiques, awesome restaurants (lots of sushi!), and pretty views.

Lots of UNHers move to Portsmouth for their senior year. It’s just a short commute and such a pretty place to live!

Kittery Premium Outlets

375 Us Route 1, Kittery, ME 03904

Also just a short drive from UNH are the Kittery Premium Outlets, always a fun place for a shopping trip. With outlet stores like J Crew, Ralph Lauren, Crate & Barrel, and so much more, UNHers can certainly get their shopping fix here!
