Spring Break in Sanibel Island!
Every year the family and I take a vacation and this year we tried something new, Sanibel Island, FL. I had absolutely no idea what to expect and when I quickly noticed that the clientele was a bit "older" I was wondering if it'd be a boring Spring Break....turns out, there's a a plethora of fun activities and spots, you just have to seek them out! The scenery is beautiful and relaxing- the perfect Spring Break for someone looking for a good tan and anything Keylime flavored ;)
Don't Be Surprised:
You may notice something while you’re in Sanibel, something like, you haven’t seen anyone under the age of 60 since you arrived. Well, it is true, Sanibel Island isn’t known for having a bunch of young spring chickens partying it up and staying out late to drink frozen cocktails. You’ll see a lot of Tommy Bahama shirts and gray hair. UNTIL, you head over to CAPTIVA ISLAND, the clientele is a bit younger and the energy is buzzing. Sanibel Island is old, retired, money. If you’re willing to go about doing your own thing and not let that bother you you’ll have an amazing time. Get into some water sports and don’t expect anything to stay open super late, the best tip I have- get a hotel room with BBQ or a kitchen and you can take the party back to your place if you want to stay up later.
TRY PADDLEBOARDING!
Don’t be fooled, this is NOT as easy as it looks. You may have seen Jennifer Aniston or Cameron Diaz on these in OK! Magazine, with their rocking bodies and after trying this, you’ll find out why. Your arms will be burnin! It’s best to try on a day that isn’t super windy, otherwise you’ll be fighting against the waves making your job a lot harder.
Go Parasailing!!!
….if you’re afraid of heights. This isn’t for you. In fact, you may not even KNOW you’re afraid of heights until you’re EIGHT HUNDRED, 800!!!! feet in the air hanging but a few pieces of fabric.
I was like Clark Griswald at the Grand Canyon on the parasail, “uh huh, uh huh, uh huh.” The view was incredible but only for about two minutes until I started to have a 800 ft. high panic attack.
If you aren’t a chicken, then have fun.
ALSO NOTE: Wear tight bathign suit bottoms. At the end they’ll give you a “dip” into the water, and my “dip” involved, dipping my pants off! into the other….bare assed flying for all of Sanibel to see.
Have a fancy Italian dinner at:
...let the watersports resume!
If you aren’t one for the ocean, you may want to bring a cooler and dedicate this trip to drinking and reading novels. Sanibel is all about activities!
Try Kayaking in the Ocean!!
“Left, left, right, right, three times on the left, now the right!!!…” That’s me calling out orders while kayaking with my sister. The only way to may this pleasurable and not a complete disaster is by taking control- you need on commander and one follower. Proof when my Father and I kayaked and ended up staying in the water for two minutes before we almost killed each other because we couldn’t follow instructions. Pick a good partner and get in sync!
Your Sanibel Spring Break!
Grab a glass of Sangria at:
Expect to walk out STUFFED when you have dinner at THE BUBBLE ROOM
With quirky decor, you own “bubble Captain” to guide you through the menu, and a fresh basket of sticky buns and cheesy bread to start you’ll be super stoked on The Bubble Room. Start with the “flaming cheese” and by the time you get your entree you’ll be ready to hibernate. Rest assured, you’ll make room for dessert though when you see their monster sized cakes. My choice, vanilla cake with pineapple, orange icing- best thing I’ve ever tasted. Heaven to the palette.
Stop for a bite to eat at:
Keylime PIE, Keylime Margaritas, incredible food- also the spot where I tasted my first ever Mahi Mahi and was not at all disappointed. You may even catch the live music and the Stevie Nicks-esque impressionist. I don’t think she’s TRYING to be her, she just, is.

BEST KEYLIME PIE I'VE EVER TASTED IN MY LIFE.
….in fact, it’s been given awards. An award winning pie recognized by Bon Apetit and Food and Wine Magazine- of course you have to have a slice.
START THE DAY OFF RIGHT WITH BREAKFAST:
One thing that was VERY common ins Sanibel was having to wait at least 20 minutes to get a table at almost ANY restaurant. So, just plan for that. It’s a small island, so when people flock out to fill their bellies they’re all doing it at the same time. Breakfast was my favorite meal while vacationing in Sanibel, because they don’t mess around- expect large portions and light lunches. Here’s the best spots:
1. Over Easy Cafe
2. Sanibel Bean (more of a coffee joint, but they have a bangin’ fruit plate and bagel sandwhiches)
3. Island Cow (somewhat of a Southern flair- great for lunch dining and fried pickles or artichokes as well)
4. Sanibel Cafe- Try the Breakfast Parfait, yummmmmyyy.
Do a little drinkin'
…..alright, you caught me- this guy wasn’t on the beach but BOY I sure wish he had been.
TAKE A BREAK FROM WATERSPORTS AND HAVE A DRINK!
One thing that’s missing in Sanibel are beachside restaurants, so when I discovered The Mucky Duck on Captiva Island, you can imagine my excitement that you could walk up to a hut, right off the water, order a margarita, wine, or an ice cold beer and carry it back to your beach chair. PERFECTION. Even though there aren’t a ton of spots like this, there’s ONE and that’s all that matters. If you’re lucky you can catch live music around 5:00.
All this water is making my HUNGRY...
Stop for dinner after freshening up (this isn’t a beach cover-up kind of place) and check out the New American menu and expect to be impressed. My favorite things on the menu: Goat Cheese Pillows! Crispy goat cheese pillows wrapped in phyllo with roasted green onion & spinach finished with a strawberry & port wine reduction.
…and that’s just a starter.

RENT A WAVERUNNER!!
Even with three people on my Waverunner we were hitting speeds up to 48 miles an hour. The waves aren’t too big so if the perfect place to make your own waves!
Visit the Sanibel Marina and take a ride on The Thriller
You’ll be thrilled alright, and PELTED WITH WATER AT HIGH SPEEDS on this boat. That’s something they don’t tell you, so make sure you bring a towel and wear a swimsuit. Note: you will get more wet if you sit at the back of the boat but you’ll also get the best view of the dolphins that swim alongside the boat, they’re almost an arms length away.
Rent a Bike!
Take a bike ride through Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge and catch a glimpse of a gator!
Do what Sanibel is KNOWN for- GO SHELLING!!!
You’ll find some of the most incredible shells on Sanibel Island. Shells with brilliant sunset colors, curly shells and pure white shells- completely in tact. I collected a bucket full to decorate frames with to remember my trip to Sanibel. The best time to go is at sunset, then you catch the beautiful view while you scavenge!
