The Galena Historical Museum, housed in an 1858 mansion, was founded in the 1930s with the purpose of collecting and exhibiting artifacts that explore the events and people that shaped the history of the region. The largest of the museum's exhibits is dedicated to the nine Galena citizens that became Union Generals during the Civil War, including President Ulysses S. Grant; other collections include an assortment of 19th and 20th century clothes and quilts, as well as many items possessed by famous historic figures. It is located right in the center of town, near Grant's Park.
