As technology advances and more and more manufacturers design their products to provide ease for everyday functions it can be seen that even in the automotive industry this level of comfort and convenience was not spared.

For those of us who still remember the days of walking to our family car for the road trip, the sweet sixteen birthday gift of a set of wheels and the forays into the various vehicles we have owned over time, our minds and key chains can still envision the keys, aplenty, to not only gain access but to start the automobile. Was it the round key for the door or the square one? Is it the same key for the ignition and locks or numerous ones for the truck and gloves box? Regardless of the size or durability of these keys there were far too many instances where due to constant use, turning, pulling, pushing and inserting the keys would break, bend or become dull, losing their shape over time. There have been some who have asked “how lazy is a person that they can’t simply lock or unlock their car doors or open a trunk?” Laziness actually plays no part in this when in any number of situations such as the lack of hand movement when carrying many items prevents one from finding a key, turning a lock on a trunk or door. Too often people have walked away from their vehicle only to remember they’ve forgotten to lock the door and these are just a few of the inconvenient and bothersome moments that do arise.

The remote keyless entry system was first offered as an option on various makes and models of vehicles in 1983 and became widespread in its popularity around 1989. Remote keyless entry systems operate on radio waves by broadcasting over certain frequencies. Buttons on the system generally include the lock and unlock feature which will signal locked or unlocked through the flashing of the vehicles lighting or with announcement through the autos horn.

Not all, but many of the keyless entry systems feature a truck unlocking button and this feature is quite helpful in that it also provides even more features of convenience with springs or hydraulics that allow the trunk to fully open prior to arriving at the vehicle. Some family type mini vans also have a similar feature but for the sliding side door, allowing it to open and close by pressing the button on the remote.

The safety measures of keyless entry versus manual locking and unlocking of vehicles are evident in, for example late night entry to one car or truck in areas or moments that a person might be unsure of. Instead of having to fidget with keys and locks easy and quick access into ones vehicle is attained and another important feature of most present day keyless entry systems is that they come equipped with a standard horn alarm for attention which provides security in case it is needed. While these systems can also open and close a vehicles window they can even be set to various security systems, garage doors and other remote items, as well as be replaced with ease by a Tampa locksmith if lost.
