Packing & Unpacking
Assess just how much stuff you will be moving. Account for large items like sofas, chairs, refrigerators, washer and dryers. This way you can arrange for the appropriate size rental truck or pod.
It’s recommended by professional packers that you load the heaviest items first because it helps with keeping the truck or pod stable.
You should store items that you will use immediately or most at the front of the truck so that you can locate them and have access to them easily.
Loading & Unloading
Always load the heaviest items first; this will help keep the truck stable on the road. It’s a good idea to store items you’ll use most at the front of the unit where you can get them easily. And make sure to rent the right sized truck for your journey. Check out our truck rental center for your rental needs.
Load the truck a quarter at a time, packing it tightly from the floor to ceiling. Secure each quarter with rope tied to the tie-down rings.
Place bureaus, large china cabinets, sofas, refrigerators, and other heavy appliances against the front wall of the truck. Use protective covers on sofas and mattresses. Then load chairs, tables, bookcases, and light items towards the back.
Moving Tips
> Boxes are your friend. Try and put as many things in boxes as possible. This will make loading, unloading, and transportation much easier.
> Make a list of the contents of each box that you pack and attach them to the box. This will save you vast amounts of time in the long run.
> Wrap all breakable items in non colored paper or wrapping. Newspaper and other print may bleed on to your belongings.
> Secure your boxes with strong tape. The last thing you want to happen is a box breaking during a move.
> Use smaller boxes rather than a few larger boxes. It is much easier to make a second trip than try and maneuver an overly heavy box.
> Use garment bags. You can move an entire closet with a few garment bags and not have to worry about wrinkles or unwanted spots. Folding them in a box or taking them loose can be a big hassle.
> Make a checklist for what you have to do prior to moving before you start. (Change of address, setting up phones, turning on electricity/gas,etc)
> Know exactly where each of your items is going to be placed, especially furniture, before you move them. Changing your mind after you get there will just give you extra work.
> Leave the difficult to move items to professionals. Why over exert yourself with the possibility that you might not be able to finish the task or damage your items.
> Make sure you use a hand truck whenever possible, this will save lots of time and energy.
> Only trust reputable moving professionals. Saving a few dollars to have your neighbor’s kids move your belongings might cost you a lot more in the long run. Have it done right the first time.
