Vintage Lovers UNITE in Los Angeles
Usually when I wear my long apple patterned, Holly Hobby dress I get a few confused glances. The truth is, I don't really care. I think that looking like a fancier character from Little House on the Prairie while rocking the perfect shade of red lipstick is cool and when you're in L.A. many people would agree with you. I've been hoarding late 60's and 70's dresses for years now and Los Angeles absolutely enabled my addiction. The addiction didn't just stop at dresses, then it leaked over into shoes and furniture, trinkets and records. If you understand this addiction or even if you're just curious about the whole "vintage love" here are some stores worthy of checking out in Los Angeles that will make even the most modern folks kick it old school.
Vintage clothing has always appealed to me because it’s unique. I love the idea that you’re wearing a little piece of history. Whether it’s a necklace, a pair of boots or a scarf, there was someone else who wore it before you, someone with a story and a history….did they get it as a gift? Did they give it away? Are they still alive? Did they give to an unappreciative grandkid that sold it to a vintage store??? There are so many questions that come along with buying vintage clothing.
It’s always great to go to a store where the buyers of the clothes are well informed and sometimes know the questions you may be curious about!
When it comes to people who know what they’re doing….the employees at Playclothes ARE THOSE PEOPLE. Not only did I have a good friend who worked there who knew more about vintage than her own Grandmother, but I have gone in looking specifically for 40’s dresses, hats from the 20’s, etc. and they are extremely helpful and knowledgeable about their products. It’s hard to not get sidetracked and start trying on cocktail dresses from the 60’s or buy an entire patio set that looks like a replica of your Granny’s. Playclothes has just as much for men as they do women and don’t stop at just clothing. You want a new(old) vase? They’ve got it. Some kitschy framed pictures of other peoples relatives? They have that too. PLUS- Greaatttttt jewelry.

Playclothes dresses the stars:
When the Hollywood A-list star, TV shows and movies are shopping here….you know you’re in good hands. Had they not snagged them first, you may have been able to wear some of the garments seen on :
- No Country for Old Men
- Desperate Housewives
- That 70’s Show
- Austin Powers
- Pushing Daisies
You'll see a lot of this.....
One problem, whose waist is that small?
The first time I stumbled into Polkadots and Moonbeams I had just enjoyed a delicious lunch at Toast down the street and came with a full belly and an appetite for some SHOPPING. Needless to say I spent more money that I thought I ever could in such a small, confined space. HOWEVER, don’t let the size fool you there are clothes from every decade, for every shape and size. Apparently I had just missed Demi Moore when I went in, which is a good thing or I would’ve scared her with questions and her and Ashton’s married life…

VINTAGE IS NEVER, EVER ALLOWED......
…..IN THE GYM.
Wasteland is conveniently placed amongst a ROW of great shops on Melrose. If you are visiting or just shopping in Los Angeles you will most likely head to Melrose at some point. So if you aren’t someone who digs vintage gear but you’re curious you can hop in and check some vintage accessories, jackets, or purses. You can buy vintage without looking like a throwback to the 70’s.

Vintage virgin????
Start by branching out with a vintage purse. You can find some great, sturdy, and trendy purses in great condition.
I pulled off Edie with the perfect VINTAGE OUTFIT
gosh, Halloween is awesome.
You may have to trade in some stuff from your closet in order to get those 70’s platforms you were eyeing.
Girl, your hat is fierce.
Remember:
You aren’t “thrift shopping” often, there is nothing “thrifty” about buying vintage clothes. If they are in good condition, even furniture, etc. yes it may be old, but because it’s lasted o long the price is often well worth it. You may find some deals but don’t go shopping with pocket change and hope to walk out with a lot.
Pearl Harbor used Playclothes
Remember when we first were introduced to Kate Beckinsale and Josh Harnett and Ben Affleck teamed up making the whole movie a delicious and attractive tribute…..remember that? Ok, well even the Hollywood stars need to get their vintage gear. Pearl Harbor was styled by many of the dresses from Playclothes.
Often when shopping for vintage clothing it can be a bit difficult to find the right FIT. Since many of the clothes were tailored for men and women’s bodies, specifically, it isn’t always easy finding something that fits YOUR body. Plus, did you notice that the women were just SO, MUCH, SMALLER??? Hm. When I went into Hubba Hubba the owner managed to accidentally offend me several times when I grabbed a dress she know would “NEVER fit” me, but at the same time…she managed to find the ones that did. There’s a very unique selection of 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and 50’s clothing here, less of the late vintage clothing. If you’re looking for a great jacket, costume jewelry, or shoes (for very small feet) Hubba Hubba is perfect.

Vintage Shopping Los Angeles
LOVVVVE your dressssss
Yes, I hug my clothing also when I really love it.
Echo Park is one of my very favorite areas in Los Angeles, cool coffee shops, great restaurants and a little bit laid back and less pretentious compared to certain parts of L.A. Flounce Vintage fits PERFECTLY here. I happen to be a huge fan of the beaded cardigan paired with more casual pants, they’re perfect because they can be dressed up or dressed down and Flounce has a huge selection of them. That is if I haven’t bought all of the good ones ;)

If you aren't into vintage TRY:
Vintage Sunglasses! Some people don’t want to look like they walked out of a time machine, but you can always add a splash of vintage here and there, sunglasses are perfect…plus, many of our current sunglasses are vintage inspired.
The Way We Wore doesn’t necessarily have all of the practical things you’d want to wear…..well, exceptions can be made if it’s L.A. since people look insane all the time, BUT, it’s the perfect place to go for very specific costume ideas, baby blue suits, chiffon cocktail dresses or vintage Halloween Costumes…..sort of like when I dressed up as Edie Sedgwick for Halloween, they had alll the gear for me and my “Andy Warhol” counterpart.

I first found Shareen when she had a booth at the weekly Sunday flea market on Melrose and Fairfax. I was a devoted dress buyer. She would pull a potential buyer into her tent, throw a dress and the perfect belt or ribbon around your waist and have you walking out with it on. Shareen helps you find whatever you’re looking for and makes sure you look amazing.
Penny Pinching....
I understand what its like to want to buy something new but not have the dough to do it. I’ve been known to sell an outfit in order to buy a new one….or to buy dinner. Check out the stores listed below where you CAN go in (try shopping in the earlier hours) and buy something unique without starving for a week as punishment.
DOLLAR DAY! NO, seriously, you cna buy things for a DOLLAR. ONE! That’s like buying a burrito from Taco Bell :) Sure you may be shopping with the homeless, but whatever, we’re all equal.

If you're brave....
Try wearing a vintage dress to your next cocktail party, wedding, or prom!….I did :) You’ll stand out, no one will have the same dress as you and you’ll have a good excuse to wear red lipstick.
